يتألف أي مركز طبي اكاديمي من ثلاثة مكونات أساسية:
  1. كلية للطب تخرج أطباء وتدرب الأطباء المقيمين؛
  2. نشاط بحثي يشمل علوم المختبرات أو الطب السريري أو كلاهما؛
  3. نظام لتقديم خدمات الرعايه الصحية والذي يمكن ان يشمل مستشفىً واحداً أو أكثر وعيادات الأطباء بالإضافة إلى عيادات طرفية.

ويمكن تنظيم هذه الوظائف الثلاث بطرق عديدة. يمثل مركز ديترويت الطبي أحد الأمثلة على المركز الطبي الأكاديمي حيث يتيح للمرضى الإستفادة من التثقيف الصحي والبحوث والرعاية الصحية التي يمكنهم الحصول عليها من خلال عدد من المستشفيات التابعة للمركز ومن خلال كليات الطب والتمريض والصيدلة التابعة لجامعة واين ستيت وتتيح هذه الشراكة لمقدمي الرعاية الصحية الفرصة للتعليم وإجراء البحوث بالإضافة إلى قيامهم بتقديم الرعاية الصحية.

1. A medical school that trains physicians;
2. Research activities involving laboratory science, clinical investigation, or both; and
3. A system for delivering health care services that may include one or more hospitals, satellite clinics, and a physician office practice.

• These three functions may be organized in many ways. In many cases, a single organization owns and operates all three. But there are different arrangements.
• For example, Detroit Medical Center, patients benefit from the health education and research conducted through the Wayne State University School of Medicine, College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. This partnership allows health care professionals the opportunity to teach classes, conduct research and translate their findings into health care for their patients.
