The Canadian Institute for Health Information, which collects health data in this country, released its annual report on mortality rates at Canadian hospitals and hospital systems. The study compares the actual number of deaths in hospitals with the average Canadian experience. A mortality ratio above 100 means a hospital or hospital system is above the national average while a ratio of less than 100 means the mortality rate is below the average.

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology intends to incorporate elements of the federal government’s newly announced privacy and security framework as the organization continues work on personal health record certification. The Health and Human Services Department earlier this week issued the framework along with a privacy and security toolkit. The latter includes a draft privacy notice for personal health records. The notice has a facts-at-a-glance label that will let consumers compare the privacy polices of various PHRs. Government prods doctors to write e-prescriptions

If the government has its way, a doctor’s prescription pad soon may be obsolete.
Beginning in January, Medicare will start paying a little extra to physicians who "e-prescribe," meaning that a prescription is transmitted directly to the pharmacy via a secured Internet site, and no paper is involved.
Officials with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services believe this method will reduce the number of medication errors caused by illegible handwriting. It may also cut down on fraud, because no one could steal the doctor’s prescription pad and use it to commit forgery. .....
